Deze gelegenheidspublicatie n.a.v. het drievoudige tentoonstellingsproject 'Een zeldzame weelde' (juni-september 2001, resp. in de museums van Gent, Deinze en Deurle) over de kunst in en rond Latem tussen 1900 en 1925, oogt als een bijzonder fraai nummer van een royaal kunstmagazine, met de ideaal geachte verhouding van één derde tekst en twee derde (kleuren)illustraties. Piet Boyens, curator van het project, zorgde voor een beknopte, maar intelligent geschreven toelichting die ook rechtstreeks op een aantal van de tentoongestelde werken ingaat.? Van het drieluik toont Gent het symbolisme van de eerste Latemse groep (Minne, De Saedeleer, de Van de Woestijnes, Binus van den Abeele en Julius de Praetere), Deinze het "veilige" impressionisme in de vooroorlogse fase van de tweede Latemse groep (de twee De Smets, Van den Berghe, Permeke en Sijs) en Deurle exposeert het typisch Vlaamse expressionisme van de naoorlogse jaren '20 (dezelfden als hiervoren, nu met Servaes erbij). Een magazine-aflevering wordt na lectuur opzijgelegd en vergeten; deze publicatie verdient bewaard te worden, alleen al wegens de afbeelding van een aantal vrij onbekende werken uit privébezit. Na de publicatie van het volledige grafisch oeuvre van Henri Van Straten (Pandora, 2002), belicht Ludo Raskin aansluitend deze kunstenaar als schilder en tekenaar. Zijn zoektocht in het begin van de jaren twintig via het kubisme en het fauvisme leidt hem definitief tot een realistisch-expressionisme dat gekenmerkt wordt door een evenwichtige compositie met een krachtige penseeltrek en een rijk coloriet waarin vooral het vrouwelijk raffinement wordt gevat. Ook in zijn pretentieloze tekeningen, een visualisering van zijn onbezorgd leven in de vrije natuur van Heide-Kalmthout, verenigt hij inhoud en technisch vernuft tot hoogwaardige kunst. Henri Van Straten (°1892), die in 1944 op mysterieuze wijze verdwijnt bij de bevrijding van Antwerpen, manifesteert zich met dit overzicht aan 'Schilderijen en Tekeningen' als een van de belangrijke kunstenaars van zijn tijd.

Pendant plus d'un demi-siècle, il n'y eut guère de capitale européenne qui ne subît la fascination de Vienne. Fascination tantôt complice tantôt méfiante car Vienne, kaléidoscope d'influences et de génies, ne cessait de révéler de nouveaux visages, d'inaugurer de nouveaux langages. Comme si, au fur et à mesure que s'amenuisait son rôle politique et diplomatique, de nouvelles forces se levaient en elle, culturelles celles-ci, abordant la plupart des champs du savoir et de l'art, en bouleversant radicalement et souvent irrémédiablement les valeurs et la logique en un mouvement portant bien au-delà de ses frontières. Cette diversité de révolutions et d'influences dont les conséquences aujourd'hui encore ne sont pas toutes épuisées, eût pu suffire à justifier que le Centre Georges Pompidou consacre une exposition à cette période.
